How to Prevent or Relieve Morning Sickness in Pregnancy?

Here are some tips to help you feel better and even avoid morning nausea pregnancy:

1. Get enough sleep

Getting a good night's sleep is important. When you're well-rested and less achy, you're better able to manage nausea in pregnancy, fatigue, and stress. Also, don’t wake up suddenly after sleeping. Allow yourself time to get out of bed, go to bed and wake up early.

2. Eat with care

Caffeine and foods high in fat and spice have a greater potential to cause the release of stomach acid, particularly as pregnancy progresses. Thus, the fetus pushes towards the digestive system, and the growing uterus puts pressure on the stomach, which can lead to acid reflux, heartburn, and discomfort after meals.

3. Eat in small portions:

Instead of going for the usual 3 large meals, you can switch to 5–6 smaller, well-balanced meals throughout the day. This helps keep your energy levels steady, reduces nausea, and prevents issues like bloating, heartburn, and indigestion, especially as your growing baby puts more pressure on your digestive system.

4. Maintain an active lifestyle

Research has shown that physical activity may reduce symptoms of nausea in pregnant women. Staying busy can help distract you from your nausea. Gentle exercises like walking, prenatal yoga, and light stretching are especially suitable during pregnancy. These activities help improve circulation, reduce fatigue, and lift your mood without putting too much strain on your body.

5. Maintain adequate hydration

Staying hydrated is essential for overall health, particularly during pregnancy. If you aren’t able to keep down water, then stay hydrated by sipping on alternatives like coconut water, clear soups, herbal teas, ginger ale, or ORS.

Water may become palatable if apple cider vinegar and honey are added. Another good technique is sucking ice cubes of fruit juice.

6. Wear loose and comfortable clothing

Tight or restrictive clothing may worsen nausea symptoms. Wearing loose-fitting clothing helps pregnant women who experience nausea feel less uncomfortable.

7. Avoid triggers

Understand how your body is reacting, and what is causing the nauseatic and vomiting symptoms. Increased sensitivity to smell is associated with morning sickness. Scents like lemon essence and rosemary may help, although some strong odours may worsen the symptoms.
